YouTube thumbnail sizes

YouTube automatically stores each thumbnail at several resolutions. Here's what each one is and where it's used.

Size nameResolutionAspectBest for
Max HD (maxresdefault)1280 × 72016:9Design reference, blog headers
Standard (sddefault)640 × 4804:3Fallback when HD is missing
High (hqdefault)480 × 3604:3Embeds and link previews
Medium (mqdefault)320 × 18016:9Lists and sidebars
Small (default)120 × 904:3Tiny previews

The 4:3 sizes add black bars above and below the 16:9 image. If you need a clean widescreen image, use Max HD or Medium.

Why the HD thumbnail is sometimes missing

YouTube only creates the 1280×720 version when the uploaded thumbnail or video is high enough quality. Older videos, some auto-generated thumbnails, and videos uploaded in low resolution may stop at 640×480. This tool checks for you and hides any size that doesn't exist, so everything you see is downloadable.

Ways creators use downloaded thumbnails

  • Competitor research. Line up the top-performing thumbnails in your niche side by side to spot patterns in color, text, and faces.
  • Recovering your own files. Get back a thumbnail you uploaded when the original design file is lost.
  • A/B test planning. Compare your current thumbnail against new versions before swapping it.
  • Blog posts and newsletters. Use your own video's thumbnail as a header image when you write about it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?

Copy the video's link from YouTube, paste it into the box at the top of this page, and select Get thumbnails. Every available size appears with a Download button.

What is the highest resolution of a YouTube thumbnail?

The largest size YouTube stores is 1280×720 pixels, called maxresdefault. Some older or lower-quality uploads don't have it, in which case 640×480 is the largest available.

Can I download thumbnails from YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste a Shorts link (youtube.com/shorts/...) and the tool pulls the same set of thumbnail sizes as a regular video.

Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?

Downloading a thumbnail to view it is generally fine. Thumbnails are owned by the creator, so reusing one in your own published work may need the creator's permission. Using one for research, reference, or your own channel's videos is the common case.

Does this tool cost anything or need an account?

No. The tool is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.
